The Real Inspector Hound

Some time ago I was asked to write music for a play. I was really scared because I hadn’t written any for 3 years. Frankly speaking, my musical carrier is in stagnation now – I do a lot of programming instead. Nevertheless, I was really excited. Will I be able to remember those good old days, where each journey through the subway with manuscript paper and pen brought a couple of new melodies? Is this the end of my musical carrier or just required rest before a new opportunity? Many questions with no answers so far.

If we are talking about skills, I can authoritatively state that there are no ex-composers. As soon as I pushed my fear aside and just started working, all my skills came back to me very quickly. It just took a quick recap of my old workbook and some psychological effort to take pen in hand again.

The director wanted to create something like an old Russian Sherlock Holmes theme from the eponymous film. And I did it… at the beginning… but further, the more I wrote, the more my pen started to control me. I was losing myself in melodies that had nothing in common with the original. It seems that I hadn’t been writing for so long, that I wanted to create something new instead of just copying. I wanted to find out where this journey would lead me.

So, as a result, the premiere took place on the 22nd of May, 2019. I am grateful to the MIDAS gang for the chance to rediscover how it feels to be a creator.
